Jasper Counseling Office

The mission of the Vincennes University Jasper Counseling Office is to facilitate the academic and personal success of students by providing mental health counseling, coaching, and information to VUJ students who are experiencing a personal problem that interferes with their ability to function in a college environment.

The Counseling Office provides free, confidential counseling and consultation to all VUJ students. A variety of situations can arise that require assistance beyond the help friends and relatives can give. While some individuals seek assistance when they are in a state of crisis, it is certainly not necessary to be in crisis in order to seek the assistance of a professional counselor.

Counseling is a process which allows a person to:

  • openly explore concerns
  • deal with personal feelings
  • consider alternatives
  • clarify goals in a supportive atmosphere

Concerns addressed in the counseling setting cover a wide variety of issues and often include relationship difficulties, major life transitions, academic difficulties, stress management, sexuality, anxiety, or depression.

Appointments typically occur on a biweekly or weekly basis depending upon availability. The number of visits varies with each individual. Some individuals just need someone to talk things over with, whereas others require more extensive contact. In addition to direct therapeutic services, referrals to local social service agencies and medical resources are facilitated when appropriate.
