Telligman receives VU Foundation’s Dorothy Walters Memorial Scholarship

VINCENNES, Ind. - The Dorothy M. Walters Memorial Scholarship Committee of the Vincennes University Foundation has announced that Elsa Telligman, of Carlisle, is the scholarship recipient for the2021-22 academic year.
Elsa Telligman (Carlisle) is the daughter of Brett and Anna Telligman. She is a 2021 graduate of North Knox Jr./Sr. High School where she has been the Cross Country Team Manager and participated in the English Academic Team, Robotics Team, Theater, Honor Society, and Yearbook. She has been employed at McKinley’s Restaurant. Elsa says about her future in education, “I want to go into education because I want to continue learning, work with kids, and provide them a safe place to be themselves. I am very excited to meet and work with this new generation of children, and I am ready for all of the challenges that will come with them.”
Walters Scholars in Education are outstanding students and citizens who are dedicated to a career in education. As a Walters Scholar, the students receive the Dorothy M. Walters Scholarship which will provide help with tuition, fees, room, board and books for two years at VU. Upon successful completion of these two years, the student will receive a scholarship for two additional years at VU or another baccalaureate college or university of his/her choice. The amount of this scholarship may not exceed $10,000 per year and will supplement other financial aid that the recipient may receive from other sources.
Ms. Dorothy M. Walters retired after a 48-year year career as an educator. She was a member of the VU class of 1936 and continued her career preparation at Indiana University. She established the Dorothy M. Walters Foundation in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, with the purpose of encouraging and assisting outstanding individuals entering a career in education. The assets of the foundation were transferred to the VU Foundation to support this scholarship. The value of the scholarship awards and the challenging selection criteria places the Dorothy M. Walters Scholarship among the most prestigious available to high school seniors.
In advancing the University’s missions of higher education and community service, the VU Foundation, through the generosity of their donors, administers endowments and contributions established by corporate and individual gifts as designated. During the 2020-21 school year, the Foundation has awarded in excess of $780 thousand dollars in scholarships to over 600 VU students.
