CHAUTAUQUA, NY - Behind sophomore Kaegan McCullough’s fourth place finish for the tournament, the Vincennes University Golf Team captured its third NJCAA Div. III Golf National Championship in six seasons earlier today at the Chautauqua Golf Course in Chautauqua, NY.
Thanks to his total score of 305 for the event, McCullough - who was only one stroke behind fourth place finisher Mason Landborg of Minnesota State - was named an NJCAA First-Team All-American as he led the Trailblazers to a total score as a team of 1237. The runner-up team was Sandhills Community College of North Carolina with a score of 1249, while the remainder of the top five teams were Georgia Military (1260, Minnesota State (1264) and County College of Morris, NJ, (1284).
Tompkins Cortland's Daniel Lapp carded a final round score of 68 on Friday to claim medalist honors with a total score of 293. Bobby Davenport of Mohawk Valley (NY) was the individual runner-up at 302.
VU - which garnered national titles in 2013 and 2016 - also featured Zach Breault and Zach Hall as Second-Team All-Americans, and Trailblazer mentor Dennis Chattin was named National Coach of the Year at the tournament’s conclusion.
The Trailblazers managed to gel as the event wore on and pulled away from the rest of the field in the middle rounds by putting up three of the five lowest team scores over the final rounds. VU led the tournament after three rounds and then used its solid rounds to fend off Sandhills’ rush toward the top of the leaderboard on the final day.
Overall, the Trailblazers turned in teams scores of 318-307-305-307.
“They just kept continuing to improve and they were good teammates; they all encouraged one another,” a proud Chattin said of his squad in an NJCAA-produced highlight video after play wrapped up. “They enjoyed the [tournament] competition, and the competition within the team was outstanding. They’re just a group of really good young men in addition to being very good players.”
