Trailblazers have impressive showing at EIU

CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Vincennes University men’s indoor track and field team proved it can compete against the big schools over the weekend.
The Trailblazers came away with a second-place finish in the Friday Night Special at Eastern Illinois University which was a field mostly of NCAA Division I programs.
Indiana State won the team title with 138.5 points, while VU totaled 71.5 points.
The Trailblazers finished better than Evansville University, Butler University, Western Illinois University and Eastern Illinois University - all NCAA programs.
Seth Vaquero and Codie Pullon swept the first two spots in the 600 meters. Vaquero dominated the race as he crossed the finish line with a winning time of 1 minute, 26.31 seconds - nearly six seconds ahead of Pullon.
It was also a record-setting meet for one Trailblazer.
Jaien Webster finished second in the 60-meter hurdles and broke the VU record for the event. Webster’s time was 8.05 seconds and broke Pierre Bank’s mark of 8.09 set in 2011.
Webster also teamed up with Cabrin Dixon, Max Kiplagat and Vaquero for a seventh-place finish in the 1,600 relay.
Josh Hodge, David McCullough, Zach Allen and Milan Todorovic also ran in the 1,600 relay and earned a second-place finish with a time of 3:26.79.
Silas Ristl added another high placing for the Trailblazers with a second-place effort in the shot put with a mark of 17.52 meters.
Todorovic and Kiplagat earned third-place medals in the 800 and 1,600, respectively. Todorovic finished the 800 with a time of 1:58.81, while Kiplagat was clocked at 4:29.29 in the mile race.
Tony Capola continued his strong season in the pole vault as he tied for fourth with a mark of 4.4 meters.
Raymond Mix took fifth in the triple jump with a best mark of 13.35 meters and Tyland Sheard placed sixth in the 60 with a time of 7.05 seconds.
Alfred Stubbs and Walter Martin rounded out the medal winners for the Trailblazers.
Stubbs finished seventh in the weight throw with a mark of 15.54 meters, while Martin finished eighth in the 400 with a time of 55.24.
In the women’s meet, the 1,600 relay team was the only one to come away with points for the Lady ‘Blazers.
The quartet of Taylin Brandenberg, Heaven Kirksey, Kaylee Lange and Asia McLemore placed sixth in the event with a time of 4:28.13.
Lange, Kirksey and Liz Bredeweg all narrowly missed out of winning medals.
Lange and Kirksey placed ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 800.
Lange was clocked in 2:33.46 and Kirksey finished two seconds behind.
Bredeweg also missed out of a medal by one spot, with a ninth-place finish in the 3,000. The sophomore finished with a time of 11:38.49.
