Trailblazers baseball makes it eight straight wins

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University baseball team finished off a four-game sweep of Spoon River with 11-3 and 6-3 wins at Jerry Blemker Field on Sunday.
The Trailblazers have reeled off eight straight wins, including 2-1 and 7-1 victories against the Snappers on Saturday. They wrapped up the weekend with a 11-6 overall record and 4-0 Mid-West Athletic Conference record.
In the first game on Sunday, VU raced to a 10-0 lead by scoring seven runs in the fourth inning.
The Trailblazers racked up 10 hits.
Sophomore Bricem Thompson collected three RBIs, hit 2-for-4, and scored one run. Freshman Trent Weiss hit 3-for-3, scored twice, and had one RBI. Sophomore Treven Madden hit a double, drove in two runs, and scored one run.
Sophomore pitcher Kavan Crowell earned the win. He struck out four, gave up five hits, walked three, and allowed two earned runs over 4.1 innings. Sophomore Isaiah Davis entered the game in relief and tallied four strikeouts. He allowed one hit and a one run in 2.2 innings. He walked two.
In the second game, the Trailblazers got off to a quick start by taking a 1-0 first-inning lead. Spoon River scored twice in the second inning. VU regained the advantage with a two-run fourth inning and led 3-2. The Trailblazers tacked on three additional runs in the sixth inning and were up 6-2.
Freshman Nate Toone was the winning pitcher and sophomore Walker Paris earned the save.
Toone tossed four innings, allowing two runs on four hits, two strikeouts, and one walk. He moved his pitching record to 3-0.
Paris notched the save by facing two batters.
Sophomore Austin Walden struck out four, allowed two hits and one run in 2.1 innings.
At the plate, Madden led VU with three RBIs. He was 2-for-2 with a double.
Freshman Sean Becker added two runs, one hit, and one stolen base.
On Saturday, the Trailblazers kicked off conference play with a pair of wins.
In a 2-1 victory, VU freshman starting pitcher Kacey Cheek struck out seven, walked one and allowed four hits in six innings. Sophomore winning pitcher Luke Lancaster struck out two and gave up two hits in three innings.
Davis drove in one run and was 2-for-2 with a double. He stole two bases. Sophomore Tyler Estes was 2-for-4, scored one run and one stolen base. Paris was 2-for-4.
VU fell behind 1-0 in the second inning. It tied the contest in the fourth inning and scored the winning run in the seventh inning.
In the Trailblazers’ 7-1 victory, freshman Ryan Robison had a big day. He picked up the win by striking out five, giving up two hits, walking two, and allowing one run in six innings. He also collected two doubles and two RBIs.
Madden drove in two runs, hit 2-for-4, and scored one run.
The Trailblazers play next against Lincoln Trail on Tuesday. The nine-inning game begins at 4 p.m. EDT at Jerry Blemker Field.
