Assistant Professor Kirk Abendroth has fielded lots of questions about Russia's invasion of Ukraine from his students, the media, and others. Abendroth is a history expert and a professor of Economics, History, and Political Science. He teaches political science, American national government, and personal law. He also teaches elementary social studies methods for the Education Department and applied psychology for the Psychology and Sociology Department. Abendroth attended Indiana State University where he earned a bachelor's degree in Social Science Education and a pair of master’s degrees in Physical Education and U.S. History. The Iowa City, Iowa native began his journey as a work study in 1980 at VU’s library. Eighteen years later, he decided to pursue his passion for teaching at VU in 1998 and has loved it since.

What do you love about working at VU?

"The relationships with students. Each semester brings new fresh faces and opportunities to assist students making their way through college."

What advice do you have for current and prospective students?

"I would tell students to go to class, do not miss class, and be in class when you are in class. I will always tell them to ask for help! You do not have to go through the process of attending college on your own."

Who would you most like to meet and why?

"I would like to meet a citizen of Russia and have a cup of coffee with them. I think it would be interesting to get their viewpoint on everything that’s going on."

What is your favorite place in the world and why?

"In my yard with my trees, plants, and grass. This is where I find serenity."

Where would you love to travel next and why?

"I would like to travel to a Big Ten College campus. I am trying to visit all of them."

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

"I enjoy singing, playing guitar, recording music, and walking in my spare time."

What is your favorite spot on the Vincennes Campus and why?

"Down by the (Wabash) River at Kimmell Park. It’s a nice getaway."
