VINCENNES, Ind. - Computer science drives job growth and innovation throughout the economy and society. Computing occupations are the number one source of all new wages in the U.S. and make up more than half of all projected new jobs in STEM fields.

Vincennes University’s response to the growing need for skilled computer employees is the development of a new Computer Science degree program. Students can achieve an associate degree in just two years with the option to transfer to other Indiana universities for completion of a four-year degree.

According to code.org, Indiana currently has 4,888 open computing jobs which is 3.3 times the average demand rate in Indiana. The average salary for a computing occupation in Indiana is $74,459, which is significantly higher than the state’s average salary, $42,940.

“The CS degree program will open the door for students to earn a degree that will put them on the path to obtain a career in a high-demand, high-wage industry,” said Jaci Lederman, chair of VU’s Information Technology Department.

"Vincennes University is excited to offer students a Computer Science degree beginning this fall,” said Rick Kribs, assistant provost for curriculum and instruction at VU. “As technology continues to be an emphasis for employers and society, this CS degree positions our students with sophisticated skills and preparation.”

The Computer Science degree program will be offered at both the Vincennes and the Jasper campuses as well as online through VU Distance Education. Registration is currently underway for the fall semester. Further details are available at vinu.edu/majors.
